Description
Though the province of South Kivu is about as large as Rwanda and Burundi combined, it’s not nearly as well known. Years of war and corruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo have led to slow growth in the coffee industry despite near perfect coffee growing conditions.
That’s starting to change as growers are beginning to benefit from industry.
This particular coffee is a very well rounded one. It works great as either a filter coffee or an espresso roast.
As a filter, it’s nicely balanced between fruity and black tea. Look for notes of raspberry, lemon, and lime.
As an espresso, we bring out a bit more of the sweetness. You’ll still have the fruit, but more chocolate and a creamier mouthfeel.
About this coffee
The Democratic republic of Congo (DRC) is one of the most resource-rich countries on the planet. However, years of political instability and civil conflict in the region has meant that much of that wealth hasn’t been realized, or has been exploited.
However, things are starting to improve. And we hope that by supporting farmers through the farm cooperatives the situation will continue to improve through the sector of specialty coffee in The DRC.
This particular coffee comes from CAEKD. The cooperative has over 150 small hold contributors.
From the South Kivu province of The DRC, this coffee cherry is handpicked from the member farms and brought to a small washing station on the Island of Idjwi. The cherries are carefully sorted and run through quality control at this washing station.
After drying, the parchment of the coffee is sent to Goma mill. At this mill, they store, pack and ship the coffee globally. The mill processes over 10,000 metric tonnes of coffee each year.
