Description

The family-owned farm at Sítio Grota Fria has been passed down through generations of coffee farmers.

The first coffee crops were planted here in 1910 by the great-grandfather of the current owner, Ademilson Noiman Borges, who divided the land between his children.

Ademilson leased part of the land from his aunt so that he could plant his first crop in 1996. Then, in 2007, he took over his father’s land.

As a new owner of the farm land, the first thing Ademilson did was apply for Certifica Minas – a certificate which shows compliance with global trade regulations.

And his improvements didn’t stop there. Determined to produce coffee for a modern, conscious audience, Ademilson also began to renew the trees on the land to improve the productivity and quality of the cherries.

The result of his hard work, risk taking and expense is the specialty coffee that you see here.

Yellow Topázio coffee cherry

About this coffee

Brazil is one of the largest coffee exporters in the world – almost 40% of the world’s coffee is produced there! – but this coffee isn’t your average Brazilian bean.

Grota Fria is selectively hand harvested, and the ripe cherry is laid in think layers to dry. With regular raking to ensure even drying, the cherry can take up to 17 days to dry. This isn’t the standard method of harvest in Brazil, making this coffee very special indeed.

Grota Fria is a Topázio, a varietal that was first bred in Brazil in the 1960s. The yellow cherry is a cross between Mundo Novo and Red Catuaí, which is crossed with Catuaí again.

This bean is very special and will take you on a complex flavour journey. Its floral finishing notes are unique for a Brazil coffee which, following the transition from cherry to brownie, will leave you feeling deliciously satisfied.
