This sparkly coffee isn’t your typical Papua New Guinea brew. It’s bursting with unusual flavours including pink lemonade and poached pear.

Baroida Estate is located in the Kainantu District, Eastern Highlands Province. The estate was founded by Ben Colbran in the 1960s.

Ben first purchased the land from a native man named Taro and was amongst the first farmers to cultivate coffee in these valleys.

Ben pioneered coffee growing in the Eastern Highlands, especially in Kainantu District. Colbran moved from New Zealand to PNG.

Today, Ben’s son Nichol runs the plantation.

The Baroida plantation sits at the apex of the Lamari River valley and Mount Jabarra range.

The plantation itself sits at about 1,700 to 1,850 meters above sea level.

About this coffee

While many coffees in this part of Asia are processed by a wet hulling method, this is a honey-processed coffee.

That means that, after being picked, this coffee is sorted and then pulped.

With the honey-like mucilage still attached to the coffee cherry, it is left to dry off naturally in raised beds.

Leaving the mucilage still on the coffee cherries mean that the coffee absorbs some of the fruitier tendencies of the coffee.

However, this coffee also still retains nice floral flavours as well.

This coffee is very floral for a Papua New Guinea.

It also has tasting notes of chocolate, pink lemonade, poached pear, and roobios tea.
